With consideration of its placement on a vehicle and its purpose, the exhaust can be regarded as the most laborious intensive part of any vehicle. The exhaust is particularly significant when the legal implications of a poor/defected exhaust system are accounted for.

The introduction of Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA) has given local authorities the power to assess exhaust emissions, and issue a fine of £60 for failing to meet the required standards of an on the spot check.

A standardised exhaust system on a majority of vehicle consists of four major sections:

  • Manifold
  • Front Down-pipe
  • Centre Section
  • Rear Silencer

 

The section most prone to becoming defective is the Rear Silencer, where moisture that gathers inside the box results in a hole being exposed through corrosion. A defected exhaust system can lead to leakage of fumes which can be both hazardous to passengers and the environment, while it can also result in the exhaust becoming illegally noisy and the failure of an MOT Test.
